Autonomous Drone Solutions – Dock and Drone-in-a-Box

What is a drone-in-a-box?

An autonomous drone solution, or drone-in-a-box, is a drone housed in a dock (a charging station) that takes off, flies a pre-planned route, lands and recharges without a pilot on site. SK Drones designs, deploys and operates autonomous dock solutions for construction progress monitoring, site surveillance and infrastructure inspections across Finland. The data is uploaded to the cloud automatically and analysed by AI. Clients can view the results in their web browser on the same day.

SK Drones has operated under a Traficom special category authorization, based on the SORA methodology, since 2018. Autonomous flights require beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, a risk assessment and regulatory authorization.

How does a dock drone work?

  1. The dock is installed on site, for example at a construction site, an industrial area or a substation. It protects the drone from the weather and charges its batteries.
  2. Flights are scheduled or launched remotely with a single click. They can be daily mapping flights, regular patrols or alarm-triggered checks.
  3. The drone flies autonomously along a predefined route while a remote pilot monitors the flight from an operations centre.
  4. Data is uploaded automatically to a cloud platform for processing, including orthophotos, 3D models, point clouds, video and thermal imagery.
  5. AI analyses the data and delivers reports, change detection and alerts directly to the client’s dashboard.

Benefits of autonomous drones

Construction progress monitoring

A dock drone captures the site every day along the same route and at the same accuracy. The result is a complete time series of project progress.

  • Daily orthophotos, 3D models and point clouds of the site
  • As-built comparison against design plans and BIM models
  • Stockpile and earthwork volume calculations without a separate survey visit
  • Indisputable documentation for contractor coordination and billing
  • Remote visibility of site status for project management, the client and stakeholders

Our special category authorization allows us to fly over an active construction site without halting work or arranging separate safety inductions for personnel.

Site surveillance and security

An autonomous drone acts as a mobile security camera. It covers large areas faster than fixed cameras or foot patrols.

  • Regular patrols of logistics, industrial and storage areas
  • Alarm-triggered response flights, with the drone on scene within minutes
  • Thermal cameras for surveillance in darkness
  • Inspection of fences, gates and access routes

Infrastructure and property inspections

  • Recurring inspections of substations, solar farms and wind farm sites
  • Condition monitoring of roofs, façades and structures
  • Volume monitoring at mines, quarries and aggregate sites
  • Environmental monitoring of floods, erosion and vegetation changes

Cost and efficiency

  • No travel costs: a pilot no longer has to drive to the site for every flight
  • More frequent monitoring: daily data for the cost of a few separate site visits
  • Repeatability: every flight is identical, so changes can be compared reliably
  • Fast response: the drone is always ready to launch

AI analysis built into autonomous solutions

The real value of autonomy comes when the drone data is analysed automatically. In dock solutions, AI analysis is part of the chain from flight to report:

  • Change detection: AI compares new data with earlier captures and highlights changes such as new structures, moved materials or deviations from plan.
  • Object detection: people, vehicles, machinery and materials are identified and counted automatically.
  • Damage and anomaly detection: cracks, corrosion, thermal anomalies and damage at inspection sites are flagged.
  • Automated reports and alerts: clients receive finished results instead of raw data.

Drone data becomes decision support without a manual processing step.

Frequently asked questions

What is a drone-in-a-box?

A drone-in-a-box is a system in which a drone is housed in a weatherproof dock (a charging station). It can take off, fly and land autonomously without a pilot on site, and it recharges between flights.

Is a permit required for autonomous drone flights in Finland?

Yes. Autonomous dock flights are usually flown beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), which requires a Traficom special category authorization and a SORA risk assessment.

How often can a dock drone fly?

Flights can be scheduled daily, several times a day or as needed. They can also be launched remotely or triggered by an alarm.

What data does an autonomous drone produce?

Orthophotos, 3D models, point clouds, video and thermal imagery. AI turns this data into change detection, volume calculations and reports.

Is a dock solution suitable for a construction site?

Yes. Construction progress monitoring is one of the best use cases. Daily capture creates complete documentation of site progress without interrupting work.

Where does SK Drones deliver autonomous drone solutions?

Throughout Finland. Our pilots are based in Helsinki, Tampere, Jyväskylä and Oulu.
